Our History
With roots dating back to the 18th century and a focus set on the future
In the 1700s, pharmacists were trained locally at pharmacies. Training began with an apprenticeship during one’s teenage years, and after many years of hard work, an exam was taken. In Stockholm, exams were conducted before Collegium Medicum, while outside the capital, they were overseen by provincial or city physicians. Naturally, the quality of training varied. For this reason, in the 19th century, Pharmacist Plagemann was tasked with establishing a standardized pharmaceutical education. The idea took hold, and one of Apotekarsocieteten’s main purposes became to “establish and run an institution for the education of young men pursuing the pharmacy profession” in chemistry, pharmacy, materia medica, natural history, Latin, and German. Until 1923, students were taught in the quarter at Wallingatan, where Läkemedelsakademin and Apotekarsocieteten are still located today.
In 1953, the Studienämnden was formed as part of Apotekarsocieteten. Its goal was to ensure that all pharmacists continued their professional development and had access to new knowledge and advancements from Sweden and abroad.
Today, we are known as Läkemedelsakademin and offer education to a even broader audience. Everyone working with pharmaceuticals and medical devicees can find their training with us. We continue to create opportunities for professional development and to serve as a meeting place for important discussions and exchanges of experience.
